Rug Placement

The magic of a rug can completely transform, soften and ground a room in an instant.

They have the ability to section and zone a large space, provide warmth, and endless hours of play time for your little ones, choose wisely as avocado is extremely hard to get out of sisal.

Sizing

Are you confused on what size rug you should purchase or if the furniture should be on or off the rug? Whether you are updating your interiors, renovating or moving into a completely new abode what matters is the size of the furniture not necessarily the size of the room.

Below are basic guidelines that I have learned over the years, but as always I suggest you rely on your intuition and sense of what feels right in the space. One of the greatest tricks is to use a roll of masking tape to measure the exact placement that you are considering. Also, have on hand the sizings your selected rug company's are offering before you get the measuring tape out.

Bedroom Rug Placement

The small bedroom image on the left has at least 2/3 of the rug surface under the bed so that when you place your feet out on the floor you land on the rug. The larger Bedroom gives the ability to have all furniture placed on the rug, inclusive of the side tables and bedhead for a more luxurious look. This can appear to be more professional but it is dictated by the space, you don't want the rug to take up all the floor space, with the inability to open the bedroom door.

What not to do is purchase a rug that is relatively too small in regards to the room and the larger pieces of furniture. We have all been tempted to utilise some of the budget conscious rugs from Kmart. Unfortunately, they often fall short in size, as the below images suggest they are No, No's that make the space feel off, this is particularly common when the rug is too small.

Lounge Rug Placement

The best way to navigate placement of all your furniture is to place the front legs of larger furniture items such as occasional chairs, and couches on the rug. Your smaller furniture can be completely on or off the rug again these are only guidelines, do what feels right.

To move or not to move? The lounge area can be high traffic so it is best practice to secure the corners. If you have blown the budget and can not purchase the anti-slip mat, a roll of double sided tape will suffice. Place it on all four corners to fasten to the carpet, tiles or the timber flooring.

Dining Rug Placement

If you can have the table and all the chairs comfortably on the rug with the ability to move your dining chairs, all the way in and out so they do not leave the rug, you are on a winner. There is nothing worst than carrying your dinner plate, as well as having to make allowances for lifting a heavy dining chair in hope it doesn't get caught on the rug.

Placement and size is determind by the furniture to be placed in the room

it is always good to rely on what feels right and perfect for the space. You are your own interior designer, tap into that knowing and creative aspect we all possess. I know some of you are saying, "I still have no idea". For those of you I have provide a couple of suppliers I have had the opportunity to work with over the years. Be mindful, that what ever rug you choose, cleaning is a priority as well as the ease of lifting furniture to access the rug? Something to ponder! Is your furniture high enough for a vaccum to access? If this is not the case ensure that once a year you roll up your masterpiece to have a specialised rug wash.
